I hate social media.
If I could live my life without it ever existing, I would. If I could eradicate it from the face of the earth tomorrow, I would. Pillar of salt, Sodom and Gomorrah-style. I also have been looking into buying a digital audio player to offload my 10 gigabytes of music off my phone, but that’s probably not related at all.
In the process of making this website and doing setup and things, I’ve started making social media accounts, something I last did in 2021. So far, I’ve only been able to bring myself to get Bluesky, but that’s because I know people on Bluesky, and I want to see how this looks before trying out other sites.
I mean. I still have to try out other sites. But I can at least wait for my next paycheck, because WordPress charges a little extra for a site email that I can use for all of these accounts.
There’s something twisted, I think, about the way artists must market themselves online. That’s time away from learning and honing your craft, and yes, it does put eyes on what you make and what you do and how you present yourself (and thus pressure on all of these things), but it’s so wildly outside the skillset of a lot of people that it kind of sours the experience. Yes, you can get money from it–people will see the things you make, and the more people that see it, the more likely someone will offer you money for it–or get some entertaining memes in return, but you an also be maligned in the comments or have your work scraped by AI bots (which is a whole other post I have planned, keep an eye out for that). It’s a reduction of “art” down to “content,” which turns my stomach and makes me go, “man, I really wish I had a walk-in freezer to scream in right now.”
Rant over. This is for testing things out, but I figured I may as well throw my unstructered rambling in here to make it somewhat informative as a post. Hopefully, I’ll see you in the next one, and it’ll be much more coherent.
